Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand (1999)
LLB (Canterbury, 1998), BRS (Lincoln, 1999)
Principal Areas of Practice

Tara’s interest in environmental law was evident at the outset of her legal career. In addition to her law degree she also obtained a specialised resource management degree, the Bachelor of Resource Studies.

After qualifying in New Zealand and being admitted as a barrister and solicitor here Tara set her sights on England where she lived and worked for seven years. During her time abroad she worked in the environmental law team at Dickinson Dees LLP. That firm is the largest in the North East of England. Tara’s clients included blue chip companies as well as small to medium firms operating in the following sectors: waste management, property development, chemicals, manufacturing, utilities and the leisure industry.

Another of Tara’s strengths is that she has worked on both sides of the regulatory fence. Not only has she provided advice and support to private businesses and individuals but she has worked in local government too. Understanding how and why local government operates as it does is of tangible benefit to her clients. She was also seconded to the UK’s largest local authority to act as an environmental prosecutor: invaluable experience for anyone expected to advise on regulatory compliance.

Tara is building her New Zealand practice around the RMA and allied topics. She can provide you with support if you are seeking consent for a project or if you wish to oppose someone-else’s application. Her resource management clients present her with
issues as diverse as large-scale irrigation schemes, vineyards, residential and urban developments. Tara also has expertise and an interest in environmental matters which fall outside the ambit of RMA consents including:

- waste management
- pollution (noise, odour, discharges)
- hazardous substances / contamination
- health and safety
- public access: the interface with the Queen’s
Chain, marginal strips, public and private roads
- Crown Pastoral Leases
- building control
- the Conservation Act
- fishing, hunting and wildlife law
- historic places and buildings
- the carbon emissions scheme
