What I do

I have a broad ranging practice which includes advice to the firm's clients on all aspects of property law including subdivision and land development, ownership structures and financing. I also advise on all aspects of commercial law including financing and refinancing of commercial ventures, business acquisitions and sales, commercial leases, licensing and franchising agreements.

My work has also extended to trusts and estate planning, asset protection, formation and administration of trusts including acting as trustee in substantial trusts with property and business investments.  My trusts and commercial expertise has assisted our overseas clients in the acquisitions of property, setting up of trusts and business within New Zealand in a wide range of sectors.

At a business level, I have a particular interest in property developments involving forestry syndications, retirement villages, vineyard development and irrigation schemes.

I maintain a strong interest in property law having been the inaugural Chair of the New Zealand Law Society Property Law section set up in 2000 and an executive member until 2013.  Up until recently, I also sat on the Canterbury-Westland branch of NZ Law Society Standards Committee.  I have also presented continuing legal education seminars for the NZLS on ethics and insurance issues relating to property. Since the Canterbury earthquakes, I have had a heavy focus on client property and insurance issues.

How I like to work with clients

The firm has some great clients who have been with us for many years and I’ve enjoyed the opportunities to work with them on both their commercial and private interests.  As a result, over time, good friendships have also emerged.  Trust is at the cornerstone of a good working relationships.  I like to invest the time to understand clients requirements and explore the options available to them.  I like to ensure  practical solutions are always achieved.

My approach to client service

Clients like to know I am onto it.  Turnaround of advice is something very important to me because clients need to know where they stand on matters.  Keeping in touch, even if its a short telephone call or email always helps keep matters progressing.

What I like doing after hours

I’m a keen sailor and have been for most of life.  I co-own a yacht and enjoy the opportunity to get out and around the Marlborough Sounds in the summertime.  I’ve also sailed around a few interesting international destinations including to Cuba in 2010 and through the Carribean and Panama in 2013.  If I’m not at the wheel of a yacht I tend to relax at our families bach at Wainui.  Increasingly as our family gets older,  I’m also travelling to keep in touch with our children and grandchildren.
